バイユーの地に散らばる死者たちの骨。それをすべて拾い集めてイバラの茂みのごとく高く積み上げる。ハンターたちがそれに火を放つと、青白い炎が立ち上る。この地には、いとも簡単に道に迷ってしまう危険が潜む。かつてこの地で迷い、今では身を潜めて生きる者たちの餌食となる危険性は言うまでもない。最初にその1人となった人物がケインだ。彼が払った犠牲は最も大きいと言われており、奥底に抱える怒りの感情をもって罪滅ぼしをしている。
ケインがかつての自分を失ったのはかなり前の話だ。だが、ケインの干からびた心を喰らう闇夜に巣くう恐怖の奥底に、そのかつての記憶がまだ潜んでいる。ケインがナイトメアを手にしているのはその記憶を打ち消すためではなく、それを引き寄せるためなのだ。自分が失ったもの、それを教えてくれるのは自分を死へと誘うこの武器だけ。ケインが死者たちから作り出したこの迷宮のような場所で自分を見失わずにいられるのは、この骨のおかげなのだ。
